With 2016 drawing to a close, it’s time to look ahead to 2017 and decide what changes (if any) you want to make in your life! A fresh year, a fresh start! Time to make some New Year’s beauty resolutions. The start of a new year is a great time to incorporate better beauty habits into your daily life.
When it comes to your beauty and skincare routine, here are a few New Year’s Beauty Resolutions that can bring you skin that’s better than ever for 2017!
1. Always wash your face before bed
The first step to having great skin is removing all your makeup (and oil, and city pollution etc) at the end of every day, without fail. I like to remove my makeup first with a cleansing oil or balm (like Boscia Charcoal Makeup Melter Cleansing Oil Balm, Farmacy Clear Bloom Cleansing Oil, or L’Occitane Shea Cleansing Oil). Then I go back in with a foam or gel cleanser, like Drunk Elephant Pekee Bar, Youth to the People Antioxidant Cleanser, or Herbivore Blue Clay Cleansing Bar.
2. Find a sunscreen you love and wear it every single day
If you aren’t already wearing sunscreen every day, you should be (yes, even in winter, even if you work in an office). Aim for SPF 30 or higher. The search for your ultimate sunscreen can be difficult and long, but once you find one you love, you really won’t mind putting it on every day. A couple of my favourites are Graydon Clinical Luxury Elements Sun Cream Complex and Cane + Austin Ultra Sheer Weightless Sunscreen SPF 50. Preventing wrinkles and dark spots is far easier (and cheaper) than trying to remove them later.
3. Exfoliate on a regular basis
Sometimes your skin needs a little help shedding dead skin cells. That’s where exfoliating comes in. I prefer chemical exfoliants, like AHA and BHA (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acids etc). Find one that is formulated at the appropriate pH, without a whole bunch of irritants. You would think it would be easy, but it isn’t. Some of my favourites are Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories G10 Radiance Peel, and Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. Aim for a few times per week.
4. Drink lots of water
Hydrating your skin from the outside is great, but you also need to hydrate it from the inside. Aim for 8 glasses a day. I keep a 1L nalgene bottle on my desk at work to remind me to drink enough water.
5. Figure out what kind of exercise you like, and do it regularly
Exercise is fantastic for your skin (and your overall health, obviously). The trick is to find something that doesn’t feel like work. For me that’s yoga, swimming, hiking, and dance. I hate weight lifting in a gym, so I generally don’t do that. But I know it’s important, so I do try to do pure strength training once in awhile. When you’re healthy, your skin glows from the inside. All the products in the world can’t replicate that glow of health. So find an activity you love, and go do it! Walking, running, zumba, yoga, pilates, boxing, karate, aquafit, whatever you want. All activity counts, just be active! Your skin (and your future elderly self) will thank you for it.
Happy New Year Lovelies!
(and may 2017 be infinitely better than 2016)
