Clinique Clarifying Lotion 1.0 Twice a Day Exfoliator Review

I was super pumped when I first saw that Clinique was coming out with another salicylic acid toner/liquid exfoliant (Clinique Clarifying Lotion 1.0 Twice a Day Exfoliator).    I ordered it  immediately so I could test it out.

For the most part, Clinique toners haven’t been kind to me in the past.  They make my face feel like I am applying nail polish remover or something.  They are awful.  A lot of people were fond of the Mild Clarifying Lotion.  But I never liked it since it had a super weird, greasy texture.  I am always looking for a well formulated salicylic acid liquid exfoliant or toner.  I would like to always have one on hand so I can keep my pores nice and clear and breakout-free.

Ingredients: Water, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Dipropylene Glycol, Biodisaccharide Gum-1, Butylene Glycol, Acetyl Glucosamine, Glycerin, Sucrose, Salicylic Acid, Caffeine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Polysorbate 20, Trehalose, Capryloyl Glycine, Disodium Phosphate, Trisodium EDTA, Benzoic Acid, Phenoxyethanol.

At first glance this seemed really promising.  No alcohol, no fragrance, contained salicylic acid.  I assumed the salicylic acid was present at 1% since “1.0” is in the product title.  But I actually have no idea how much is in this product.  The amount should be disclosed on the packaging somewhere.  I also liked the watery texture, since it didn’t leave my face feeling greasy or overly shiny.  The price was good too, at 6.7oz for $14.50.  But after a couple weeks of use, I noticed more clogged pores and I was starting to break out more than normal.  It turns out that’s because it’s actually formulated at a pH too high for exfoliation to occur (thanks for testing that Beautypedia).

Seriously, Clinique?  SERIOUSLY?  You are one of the biggest cosmetic and skincare brands IN THE WORLD!  Why can you not make a decently formulated, effective AHA or BHA toner or liquid exfoliant?  Your options consist of either something akin to paint stripper, or ineffective witch hazel water.  Figure your s*** out Clinique.  I expected better from you.

I got my bottle of Clinique Clarifying Lotion 1.0 Twice a Day Exfoliator  at Sephora.  But I don’t recommend trying this one out yourself.
