Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories Multi-Action Penta Peel Review

I was so excited to try the Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories Multi-Action Penta Peel after the success I had with the 10% Glycolic Acid Pads from the same brand (you can find that review HERE).  I figured that if the glycolic acid peel was good, then the peel containing not one, but five acids would be so great.  Boy was I disappointed.  I should have checked the ingredients list.

Yes, this peel does contain five different acids – hence the name “penta peel” (mandelic, phytic, lactic, salicylic, and hyaluronic).  The mandelic, phytic, lactic, and salicylic acids exfoliate, brighten, and unclog pores, and the hyaluronic acid helps skin to retain moisture.  But the second ingredient in this product is denatured alcohol, legendary skin drying, flake inducing, acne causing alcohol.  Why DCL? WHY?  The orange and lemon fruit extracts could also be a problem for some, though citrus fruit extracts are generally less irritating than citrus peel oils.  I’ve used products with orange fruit extract and had no issues.  On the upside, there is no synthetic fragrance, silicones, or parabens.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), SD Alcohol 40B (Alcohol Denat.), Mandelic Acid, Ethoxydiglycol, Phytic Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine, Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit/Leaf Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Ammonium Hydroxide.

The jar come with 50 pre-soaked acid peel pads that you wipe all over your face and then discard.  I will admit that the brightening aspect of the pads really does work.  I noticed a bit of lightening of a dark spot or two after several uses.  But whenever I use them (and apply very hydrating moisturizers and oils afterward), I end up with a super peely, flaky face the next day and have issues putting on my makeup.  I also know that my skin will break out if exposed to alcohol on a frequent basis, so this product just isn’t worth it for me.  The alcohol content is also very apparent in how the product smells.  Definitely don’t inhale when using them because it will feel like it’s burning your nose.  Now I need to find a way to use up 40 more exfoliating pads…

So, based on the quantity of alcohol in these pads, I really can’t recommend them for sensitive skin or people who can’t handle alcohol in their products (although really, nobody should use products containing large quantities of alcohol).   But if you really want to try them out, or perhaps you really like products with alcohol and it doesn’t bother your skin, you can get the Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories Multi-Action Penta Peel for $46USD on Amazon.

Update: This product has been repackaged into a black screw top container, it is no longer sold in the container shown in the photograph.
