Drunk Elephant Pekee and Juju Cleansing Bar Review

Drunk Elephant Pekee and Juju cleansing bars are products I’ve been meaning to try out for awhile.  I’m a big fan of Drunk Elephant and their brand philosophy (natural, scientifically proven ingredients, cruelty free, fragrance free etc).  I’m also intrigued by the idea of cleansing bars (travel-friendly skincare for the win!).  Plus, these don’t contain any harsh surfactants or irritating fragrances and essential oils, which is a rare find in cleansing bars.  Turns out, they are both excellent cleansing options, especially for sensitive skin.  I also love that cleansing bars (in general, not just these ones) last a really long time.  I’ve been using my set of 1oz travel set of cleansing bars for a couple weeks and they barely look used at all.  These cleansing bars aren’t cheap, but I think they are still a good value because they last awhile.

Pekee Cleansing Bar

Drunk Elephant Pekee cleansing bar is designed for nighttime use.  It has a lovely creamy/milky lather (not particularly foamy) and it removes makeup really well.  I usually remove my makeup before cleansing, but when testing cleansers I always try them out with a full face of makeup just to see how well they do.  And this one did a really good job.  It removed pretty much all of my (non-waterproof) mascara and my liquid eyeliner was all gone.

I really enjoyed that this cleanser doesn’t seem to run out of lather.  You know how when you apply a foamy cleanser to your face, the more you massage it in the less foamy it is?  Yeah, this one doesn’t do that.  It’s almost like the more you massage it in, the more lather you get.  Which is great when you are trying to get all your makeup off.

I’m a fan of the natural ingredients used to make this cleansing bar.  It contains coconut based surfactants (not sulfates, so it’s gentle), honey, blueberry and Drunk Elephant’s star ingredient: marula oil.  Also a plus, no fragrances.  So this is a great option for sensitive skin.  You may find it a bit too hydrating if you’re really oily, but I think it’s a great option for pretty much everyone.

Ingredients: Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Triticum Vulgare (Wheatgerm) Starch, Cetearyl Alcohol, Paraffin, Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula) Kernel Oil, Water, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Honey, Glycerin, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract.

This bar left my skin feeling clean, soft, and hydrated.  It didn’t dry out my skin at all, not did it cause any adverse reactions.  It’s fantastic.  Drunk Elephant Pekee cleansing bar is a winner.

A 4oz bar is $28USD.  Find it at Sephora or DERMSTORE

Juju Cleansing Bar

The Juju cleansing bar is designed for morning use.  It contains bamboo powder and clay so that when you lather it up in your hands, you get tiny exfoliating particles that gently buff your skin to wake it up in the morning.  It’s really lovely, not too abrasive at all.  It’s a little foamier than the Pekee bar.  I found it left my skin feeling really smooth and ready for skincare and makeup application.   However, something to keep in mind: if you are sensitive to any kind of exfoliation (or prone to redness) you may want to stick with the Pekee bar.

But otherwise, it’s another great option for sensitive skin since it’s sulfate free and fragrance free.

Like the Pekee bar, it also uses non-sulfate coconut based surfactants and contains marula oil.  So it’s a gentle exfoliator that doesn’t strip your skin too much.

Ingredients: Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Triticum Vulgare (Wheatgerm) Starch, Cetearyl Alcohol, Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf/Stem Extract, Paraffin, Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula) Kernel Oil, Heilmoor Clay, Water, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract.

I wouldn’t recommend using this as your evening cleanser unless you have already removed your makeup.  It actually does a good job of makeup removal though.  I’m just not a fan of removing my makeup with exfoliating cleansers.  Overall, this is an excellent cleansing bar.  I totally recommend it.

A 4oz bar is available for $28USD at Sephora

Pekee and Juju Cleansing Bar Travel Duo

Alternatively, if you aren’t too sure about either option, test them out by getting a set of travel sized bars (1oz each) for $18USD Sephora or DERMSTORE

I think you’ll probably like them as much as I do.  Drunk Elephant Pekee and Juju bars make a great morning/evening cleansing duo.
