tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Tinted Pressed Setting Powder Review

For my first official blog post, I wanted to review one of my longtime favourite makeup products: tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Tinted Pressed Setting Powder.

This is one of the few powder makeup products I have ever found that does not cause me to break out.  It also has decent lasting power.  It is a wonderfully smooth, fine-milled, pressed mineral powder that applies beautifully with either the sponge applicator provided (for slightly more coverage) or with a fluffy powder brush (for a light dusting of powder to set foundation).  My shade is Light (shown in the photo below and to the right), which is a very good match for me in the summer when I have a bit of colour.   But it’s a bit dark and a touch too yellow for me in the winter when I’m a little more pale.  All the shades are fairly warm toned, except Fair, which is more neutral.

The finish on this powder is quite matte, which I like since my skin tends towards being oily.  It lasts pretty well, with a blot or quick touch-up required around lunch time or early afternoon.  Even if you re-apply frequently it looks quite natural, never too cakey.

For $34USD, you get 0.39oz, which is a fairly standard amount for a pressed powder.  It’s not cheap, but it is a quality product that usually lasts me for several months with daily use.

Tarte is a fantastic brand and I have enjoyed using many of their products (reviews to come…).  The brand is natural and cruelty-free, and this pressed powder is fragrance-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, phthalate-free, mineral oil-free, talc-free, silicone-free, and gluten-free.  In addition, it contains vitamins A and E to help fight free radical damage.  I have included the ingredients list below, taken directly from the tarte website.

Ingredients: Mica, polyethylene, HDI/trimethylol hexyllactone crosspoymer, tricaprylin, boron nitride, nylon-12, caprylic/capric triglyceride, magnesium myristate, aluminum hydroxide, ascorbyl palmitate, chlorphenesin, hydrongenated lecithin, isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, kaolin, lanolin alcohol, potassium sorbate, retinyl palmitate, silica, stearic acid, tetrasodium EDTA, tocopherol, tocopheryl acetate, triethoxycaprylylsilane. (+/-): Manganese Violet (CI 77742), iron oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), bismuth oxychloride (CI 77163), chromium hydroxide green (CI 77289), zinc oxide (CI 77947), titanium dioxide (CI 77891).

I am a big fan of this powder and definitely recommend it to those with sensitive skin.  I have been using it for years (since back when it came in a purple magnetized cushioned compact) and it has never caused a problem for me.  It looks great applied alone for a more natural look, or applied over foundation as a setting powder.

If you want to try it out for yourself, it’s available at Sephora.
